Safety is Northwest Tank Lines’ number one core value — and this role is its champion.
With 71 years of history behind us, our safety management system is not being built
from scratch. It is established, respected, and the product of decades of operational
experience and dedicated people.
Currently, we are looking to hire an HSE Manager. The person we are looking for will
begin by genuinely understanding and respecting what exists, not arriving with a
mandate to reinvent it.
From that foundation, this leader will be responsible for articulating, upholding, and
actively advancing our safety management system. You will work from our Calgary
office, providing strategic oversight to a team of three HSE Field Supervisors and one
HSE Coordinator, while serving as the organization’s primary HSE voice — credible in
the field, compelling in the boardroom, and trusted by our external partners.
This is a role with a long horizon. As field safety roles evolve and reporting structures
mature, the HSE Manager will increasingly shift focus from day-to-day coordination
toward program progression and strategic safety leadership.
Job Description:
Leadership & Strategic Oversight
- Team Management: Provide direct leadership and oversight to three HSE Field
Supervisors and one HSE Coordinator.
- Program Strategy: Lead the annual review of safety programs and establish
clear HSE objectives and targets across the organization.
- JHSC Leadership: Provide strategic direction for the Joint Health & Safety
Committee (JHSC) to ensure effective internal safety advocacy.
- Disciplinary Lead: Act as the primary lead on disciplinary matters related to
safety violations.
Incident & Compliance Management
- Incident Oversight: Maintain full oversight of the HSE team for all incidents,
ensuring thorough investigation, documentation, and resolution.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to AB/BC COR programs,
Transportation regulations, and Responsible Care standards.
- Audit Leadership: Manage and oversee comprehensive audits and assessments
to maintain ongoing regulatory compliance.
Technology & Proactive Risk Management
- Data-Driven Safety: Champion the organization’s use of the Samsara platform to
proactively identify risk behaviors and trends, moving beyond reactive incident
response toward predictive safety management.
- Analytical Insight: Translate incident data and field reports into actionable safety
targets, performance improvements, and program advancements.
Reporting & External Relations
- Quarterly Reporting: Produce comprehensive quarterly HSE reports including
incident statistics, trend analysis, and performance metrics.
- Communication: Identify and communicate significant achievements, challenges,
and new initiatives to internal and external stakeholders.
- Stakeholder Liaison: Serve as the primary liaison for customers, insurance
providers, and CLAC — effectively telling our safety story and representing our
program with confidence.
Job Requirements:
Experience & Expertise
- Proven experience in a senior HSE leadership role with direct reports in a
transportation, logistics, or industrial environment.
- Expert knowledge of AB/BC COR programs, provincial transportation
requirements, and legislative compliance.
- Strong background in managing complex incident investigations and team-wide
oversight.
- Willingness to be on-call to respond to emergencies and accidents.
Communication Across All Audiences
This role demands an exceptional communicator. You will need to:
- Speak credibly and directly with drivers and field staff.
- Present professionally to customers, customer contacts, and leadership.
- Represent Northwest’s safety program confidently to insurance providers and
external regulatory stakeholders.
Technology & Data Fluency
- Comfortable working with fleet safety technology platforms, with direct
experience in Samsara, is considered a strong asset.
- Ability to interpret safety data and behavioral trends to drive proactive,
forward-looking decisions.
Character &Commitment
- A genuine, integrated passion for safety excellence — not a checkbox mentality.
- Intellectual curiosity and the patience to understand an established system
before seeking to improve it.
- Long-term ownership mindset with the ambition to grow alongside the role as it
evolves.
