Position Summary
We are looking for a reliable, energetic, and child-focused instructor who enjoys working with elementary and middle school-aged children. This is a flexible, part-time role ideal for teachers, supply teachers, ECEs, education students, camp leaders, recreation staff, tutors, or anyone with strong experience working with children.
Challenge Island will provide training, lesson plans, program materials, and supplies. The instructor will be responsible for delivering engaging, safe, and organized STEAM sessions at various locations across Barrie and surrounding areas.
Responsibilities
- Lead hands-on STEAM enrichment programs for children ages 5–14
- Facilitate teamwork, creativity, communication, and problem-solving
- Follow provided lesson plans and program instructions
- Set up, organize, and clean up materials before and after each session
- Manage classroom behaviour in a positive and professional manner
- Encourage participation and support students with different learning styles
- Travel to schools, camps, childcare centres, libraries, community centres, and event locations
- Transport program materials as needed
- Communicate professionally with Challenge Island owners, school staff, parents, and community partners
- Maintain a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment
Qualifications
Required:
- Minimum 1 year of experience working with children in a teaching, childcare, camp, tutoring, coaching, or recreation setting
- Reliable transportation and access to a vehicle
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs of supplies
- Vulnerable Sector Check required before working with children independently
- Availability during some after-school hours, school-day field trips, PA days, camps, and/or occasional weekends, depending on bookings
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree, college diploma, or current studies in Education, Early Childhood Education, Child and Youth Care, Recreation, Science, Engineering, Arts, or a related field
- Teaching, tutoring, ECE, camp, or classroom leadership experience
- First Aid/CPR certification
- Experience leading STEM/STEAM, science, robotics, coding, art, engineering, or hands-on learning activities
Schedule
This is a flexible part-time/casual position. Hours will vary based on program bookings and instructor availability.
Programs may take place during:
- School hours for in-school field trips
- After-school hours
- PA days and school breaks
- Summer camps
- Occasional evenings or weekends for special events and birthday parties
