About the Role
The Staff Accountant (CPA Student Welcome) supports the daily financial and accounting operations of JM Controls & Electric and related entities. Working closely with the Controller and Finance team, this role contributes to financial reporting, reconciliations, month-end close activities, budgeting support, and operational accounting processes.
This position provides an excellent opportunity for a CPA student or accounting professional seeking hands-on experience across multiple areas of accounting and finance within a growing organization.
The successful candidate will be detail-oriented, analytical, and motivated to develop their accounting career while supporting the financial success of the business.
Key Responsibilities
General Accounting and Financial Operations
- Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, and account adjustments
- Perform bank, credit card, and general ledger reconciliations
- Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation
- Investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies in a timely manner
- Ensure compliance with company accounting policies and procedures
Financial Reporting and Analysis
- Assist with preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports
- Support month-end and year-end close processes
- Analyze financial information and identify unusual variances or trends
- Prepare supporting schedules and reconciliations for management reporting
- Assist with budgeting and forecasting activities
Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable Support
- Support accounts payable and accounts receivable processes as required
- Assist with vendor reconciliations and customer account reviews
- Review invoices and supporting documentation for accuracy
- Assist in monitoring outstanding receivables and resolving discrepancies
Operational and Inventory Accounting
- Assist with inventory accounting, costing, and reconciliation activities
- Support inventory control processes and inventory-related reporting
- Partner with Operations and Purchasing teams to ensure financial accuracy
- Assist with project costing and operational analysis as required
Audit, Compliance, and Process Improvement
- Assist with year-end audit preparation and supporting documentation
- Support compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements
- Participate in process improvement initiatives and financial system enhancements
- Support special projects and organizational initiatives as assigned
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field required
- CPA student enrolled in or actively pursuing the CPA designation preferred
- 5+ years of accounting experience preferred
- Experience in manufacturing, project-based, construction, or multi-entity environments considered an asset
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
Technical Skills and Competencies
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
- Experience with ERP systems such as Sage Intacct, Service Fusion, or similar accounting software preferred
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
- Professional verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment
- Professional discretion in handling confidential financial information
Additional Requirements
- Must be able to work full-time in the Chatham office
- Valid driver's license required
- Ability to travel periodically to company locations within Ontario as required
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial information
