Majestic Arts Centre Limited (MACL) is hiring a Lighting Technician at The Majestic Theatre, working on all events occurring on The Majestic mainstage and at Theatre Hill Bar & Café. MACL is an inclusive community performing arts non-profit dedicated to delivering high-quality live productions, including plays, musicals, and special events, providing an arts hub for the community. There are two technical roles being hired at this time. Once the candidates are determined, there will be a division of duties as Head Technician and House Technician. Department Head top up to be offered based on experience.
LIGHTING TECHNICIAN
We are seeking a skilled and reliable Lighting Technician to join our production team and help bring performances to life through exceptional visual experiences.
Reports to: Executive Director, Majestic Arts Centre Limited
Hours of work: 40 hours weekly, flexible (evening and weekend work required). The position is an in-person role located in St John's, NL.
Position Overview
The Lighting Technician is responsible for the overall assistance of all technical aspects of all events from setup, operation, and maintenance of all equipment for rehearsals and live performances. This role focuses on lighting experience, requiring strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to work calmly under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
CORE AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Key Responsibilities
· Lighting Technician for productions at The Majestic Theatre and events/performances at Theatre Hill Bar + Café.
- Set up, programming, operation and troubleshooting of lighting video systems, which may include programming, hanging fixtures, design, and operating lighting consoles.
- When assigned, operating audio, video, sound and stage aspects of productions and events.
- Set up, repair, execute changes, and strikes of scenery and staging for all types of event.
- Assist in setting up/striking floor seating and table setups for audience
· Participate in production load in, technical work, event, and strike/load-out
· Operate lighting console during rehearsals and live performances
· Set up, test, and strike lighting equipment
· Assist with all other technical elements of productions with support from the technical department
· Collaborate with renters, creative teams, performers and other staff to create excellent lighting for renters’ productions
· Troubleshoot and resolve technical lighting issues quickly and efficiently
· Maintain and organize lighting equipment and inventory
· Follow all company policies and procedures, Health & Safety, Fire, Employment Standards and Workplace regulations, ensuring they are followed by casual crew.
· Other duties as may be assigned or reasonably expected of a Lighting Technician.
QUALIFICATIONS
· Minimum 2 years of proven work experience in our industry
· Knowledge of and/or experience in the following:
o Digital Lighting consoles (ETC Gio @5 lighting console)
o Lighting design and effects
o Hazers and foggers
o DCP Cinema Projectors and playback
o Grid distribution
o Theatrical/entertainment rigging
o Live cameras, video switchers
· Previous venue lighting visual technical experience required
· Formal training in lighting
· Experience in theatre, concerts and events
· Working knowledge of lighting, fixtures, lighting techniques
· A strong understanding of Theatre lighting systems and processes
· Strong understanding of video, projections and digital audio networking protocols (Dante) considered an asset
· Experience working in a customer service environment
· Attention to detail and excellent organization, verbal and written communication skills
· Ability to work flex time as required
· Valid Driver's Licence
- Physical abilities with regards to lifting and moving of scenery/equipment, climbing stairs/ladders, loading and unloading trucks, hanging equipment, and other typical technical theatre functions.
- Ability to comfortably and confidently work at heights, both on ladders and mobile Elevating Work Platforms. Working at height training is considered an asset.
Salary & Benefits:
Compensation: $52,000-$55,000 annual salary, commensurate with experience. Based on 40 hours weekly - weekend and evening work required. This role could be promoted to serve as a Head Technician, as the lead venue Technician, or be assigned the role of House Technician at this salary range.
