SE Design has a career opportunity for a Junior Geotechnical Engineer-in-Training to join our associated Geotechnical Engineering Firm, ENC Testing Inc. in our Sherwood Park, Alberta office.
Summary
- We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior Geotechnical Engineer-in-Training to support geotechnical investigations, field materials testing, laboratory testing, field inspection, engineering analysis, and technical reporting for a variety of civil, municipal, transportation, and infrastructure projects.
- This role is well suited for an early-career engineering professional who is registered or eligible for registration as an Engineer-in-Training with APEGA and is looking to develop practical geotechnical engineering experience under the guidance of experienced professional engineers.
- The successful candidate will assist with planning and completing field investigations, reviewing soil characterization and groundwater conditions, supporting foundation and slope stability assessments, and contributing to clear, accurate, and technically sound project deliverables.
- The position will include a combination of fieldwork, office-based analysis, report preparation, client and contractor coordination, and collaboration with SE Design’s civil engineering, geomatics, and construction services teams.
- Periodic travel throughout Alberta may be required to support field investigations, construction inspections, and project delivery.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the planning, coordination, and completion of geotechnical field investigations, including borehole drilling programs, soil sampling, groundwater observations, and field logging.
- Prepare clear and accurate field notes, borehole logs, site sketches, photographs, and other field documentation for review by senior technical staff.
- Coordinate and review laboratory testing results for soil, aggregate, asphalt, and concrete materials, as applicable to project requirements.
- Assist with laboratory testing tasks, including sample receiving, preparation, documentation, test coordination, results tracking, and communication with laboratory personnel to support timely and accurate reporting.
- Support geotechnical engineering analysis related to shallow and deep foundations, settlement, pavement structure, slope stability, retaining structures, subgrade preparation, and earthworks recommendations.
- Assist in preparing geotechnical reports, technical memoranda, specifications, construction recommendations, and other project deliverables under the supervision of professional engineers.
- Complete and/or assist with field materials testing and construction review activities, including compaction testing, concrete testing, aggregate sampling, asphalt sampling, subgrade inspections, and observation of earthworks and foundation construction.
- Communicate professionally with project managers, field staff, contractors, clients, laboratories, and sub-consultants to support efficient project delivery.
- Support proposal preparation, cost estimates, project schedules, and work plans for geotechnical and materials testing assignments.
- Work in accordance with SE Design’s health and safety program, project-specific safety requirements, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrate a positive attitude, strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and a willingness to learn and grow within a multidisciplinary consulting environment.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in civil, geotechnical, geological, or related engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
- Registered or eligible for registration as an Engineer-in-Training with APEGA.
- One to three years of relevant experience in geotechnical engineering, materials testing, construction review, civil engineering, or consulting. Co-op, internship, or field experience will be considered an asset.
- Foundational understanding of soil mechanics, geotechnical investigation methods, foundation design concepts, earthworks, slope stability, pavement materials, and construction practices.
- Experience with field logging, laboratory testing coordination, construction inspection, or materials testing would be considered an asset.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare accurate field notes, technical summaries, and draft reports.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office. Experience with geotechnical, drafting, GIS, or engineering software would be considered an asset.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and travel to project sites as required.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driving record.
