Cashier

8:00AM to 8:00PM (Mon – Fri)
8:00AM to 6:00PM (Sat & Sun)
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The cashier provides all point-of-sale functions, including recording and collecting for customer purchases, processing transactions (cash, credit card, debit card) using retail software, keeping accurate record of all cash, in-house charge, and credit card transactions (debit, gift card etc.), reconciling records of sales with cash and credit information and making sure they balance, and performing various services for customers, such as providing information and confirming prices, all done in a prompt, friendly manner. The cashier performs all assigned tasks with sufficient speed and accuracy to support store efficiency and a high level of customer service.
DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
Greet and verbally communicate with customers, management, and staff both in person and by telephone.
Operate all point-of-sale equipment, including the cash register, with sufficient speed and accuracy.
Verify signatures on the back of credit cards and expiry dates.
Follow proper procedures according to store policy regarding returns, warranties, and refunds.
Ensure customers have had a positive shopping experience; take steps to rectify if they haven’t.
Answer the phone promptly and take messages according to store policy.
Call when special orders come in.
Assist customers who need advice, information, or directions.
Page individuals over the public address system when necessary.
Maintain price information (flyers, in-store promotions, etc.) for reference when customer price inquires arise.
Be familiar with items in stock and yard inventory, including product use and operation.
Watch for shoplifting and act according to store policy.
Maintain the check-out area and merchandise displays.
Keep the store tidy; clean the store and check-out area at the end of the shift.
Tabulate sales at the end of the day and/or end of the shift and remove cash from the register in accordance with store policy.
Attend store meetings, training sessions, etc. as required.
Assist in training new cashiers.
Ensure your designated aisles and/or area of the store are filled, faced, and clean at all times.
Help in putting stock away from deliveries and maintaining a designated overstock location.
Keep stock in the storage area neat, clean, and orderly as well assist in clearing room for truck.
Advise the designated manager of discontinued products, damaged goods, back-orders, etc.
Update prices on merchandise, bins, displays, etc. as necessary.
All staff are expected to cut wire, cut chain, cut keys, cut rope, cut pipe, exchange propane, print signs and shelf labels, cover cash, register products with warranty, shake and mix paint, assist in the floor daily priorities and make popcorn.
Remove sale and promotional displays, prices, etc. and rearrange stock following promotional events.
Process special orders for non-stock or out-of- stock items.
Participate in regular cycle counting and assist in annual inventory counts.
Assist customers with carrying out large or heavy items.
Fill in as a cashier and can mix paint when necessary.
Follow procedures and maintain standards according to store policy in the following areas: loss prevention, receiving and pricing goods, merchandise handling and presentation, housekeeping, using the stock adjustment sheets, restocking shelves, and handling cash.
Attend store meetings, training sessions, etc. as required.
Has the ability to perform all tasks outlined in training requirements.
Work on additional duties and assignments as assigned by management.
Work in a safe manner in accordance with provincial and federal safety legislation. Report any potential hazards and unsafe behavior to management to have the situation corrected.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High School graduation or equivalent.
Retail experience is an asset.
Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
Friendly and helpful attitude toward customers.
Excellent communication skills.
Good mathematical skills.
Ability to work co-operatively in a team atmosphere.
Willingness to learn.
Willingness to continually develop professional skills and knowledge base.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to move merchandise weighing up to 50 pounds from the receiving area to the warehouse and place it on shelves.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports directly to the Store Managers.
