*NOTE: To be eligible for a Canada Summer Job (CSJ)-funded position with United for Literacy, a youth must be between 15 and 30 years old, be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected refugee, and be legally entitled to work in Canada with a valid SIN. International students and foreign visa holders are strictly ineligible for this specific government program.

United for Literacy (formerly Frontier College) is a national charity that was founded in 1899. We believe literacy is a right, and that every place can be a learning place. Our vision is a Canada in which everyone has the literacy skills they need to achieve their goals at school, at work, and in life. Our mission is to provide local learning support programs that change lives.

The opportunity:

Under the supervision of the Community Coordinator, the Summer Literacy Program Facilitator will plan and deliver summer reading activities for children ages 5-12. Programming will include one-to-one and small-group reading support, as well as weekly Reading Circle sessions for groups of children.

The summer reading program is designed to help children become strong readers, enjoy learning during the summer months, access quality books, and return to school in September feeling ready and confident to succeed.

Training will be provided on working with children, how children learn to read, and tutoring strategies. Ongoing support and opportunities for skills development will also be provided by the Community Coordinator.

Main responsibilities and duties:

Create a fun and safe atmosphere that promotes reading and literacy for children and families
Schedule, plan, and deliver one-to-one and small-group tutoring sessions
Plan and facilitate fun, age-appropriate literacy activities
Promote summer programming and support learner registration
Engage and communicate respectfully with children and families
Evaluate summer programming through discussions, surveys, and data collection with relevant stakeholders
Maintain accurate program records and submit data according to reporting deadlines

Skills, Attributes and Requirements

Experience working with children in an educational or recreational setting
A passion for literacy, education, and community development
Energetic and expressive read-aloud skills
Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully
Creative and willing to contribute ideas
Ability to adapt to changing situations
Computer skills (Office Suite, Google Workspace, Canva)
Flexibility to work occasional weekend events (usually 2 to 3 hours)
Access to a car or reliable transportation is necessary
